Visiting a church for the first time can be nerve-racking. But having an idea of what to expect can help. We are a nondenominational fellowship of believers in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Our worship service is a family type (for all ages) with nursery provided. Sunday school classes are for children, youth, and adults. The services include singing hymns and praise songs, praying together, Scripture reading, a collection, and preaching.
We celebrate two sacraments: Holy Communion on the first weekend of every month and Baptism by immersion in a local lake in the Summer or when needed.
Emmanuel Evangelical Church was established in 1880 at our current location by the German- speaking evangelicals who settled the Petoskey area. The land was bought from Chief Petoskey and became one of the first churches in the area. Worship services and church records were in the German language until the 1920’s when English was included. This continued until about 1945 when German was eliminated from church worship.
Church affiliations have also been a part of Emmanuel’s history. In 1934 when the Synod merged with the Reformed Church, it became Emmanuel Evangelical Reformed Church. In 1957, the church merged again with the Congregational Christian Church and became Emmanuel United Church of Christ. In 1975, action was taken by the membership to withdraw from the Synod of the United Church of Christ, becoming an independent church known today as Emmanuel Evangelical Church.
